A second interview with the storyteller Didem Tarlali

What impacts you most to produce?

I have something inside of me. Whether I call it a soul or a self. It hears, sees, smells, touches, tastes ... And more .. What drives me to produce is communication and non-communication. With people, with things, with nature, with ourselves, with words, with emotions and with the universe ... Touching one emotion with another emotion, touching one thought with another thought, touching one eye with another eye, sharpening it, revealing it, the feeling of that sharpening moment pushes me to produce. When I write a story, poem or when I tell a story, my heart grows bigger and becomes one with the whole universe.

What does it mean to fall in love for you?

I think life is a gift and love is a gift pack. Love peels our soul. I want a love that doesn't cut my feet off the ground, but instead deepen me with roots like a tree and raise me to the sky. I produce more when I'm in love. I love everything more. Loving a person is perhaps taking a beautiful photo of something disturbing. Finding beauty is breaking beauty. Feeling joy and pain at the same time.

Why is Crete and the Balkan culture important to you?

My great-grandmothers and great-grandfathers immigrated from Crete and the Balkans. My roots are there. And when I listen to the Cretan or Balkan song, I can feel the smell of that land, the smell of the country, and I can feel the family stories that I never knew.

Which languages do you relate to?

Turkish is my homeland. But Greek, Slavic languages and Arabic inspire me. I can read Greek, Cyrillic and Arabic alphabets. I tried to learn Greek from my grandmom, and I graduated literature at the university, I learned Arabic alphabet and many Arabic words. Although I don't understand I read poems and words in 4 different languages. Because I know that I hear the melody, my soul understands.
