An interview with Didem Tarlali

How can you describe yourself?
I can define myself as the one who tries to understand by heart, who loves to live, who has high energy and an independent soul.
You are a storyteller. Through which ways do you approach your story, your reality?
I try to avoid just describing reality, just talking about it. I try not to use all the known expressions, but searching the details inside and between the facts. I am not anxious just to learn about the facts, i try to use my heart and soul to explain and feel them.
So, what is your story?
When I was a kid, my grandmother used to tell me many anatolian, arabic and european stories (she still does). I was always eager to listen to all these stories. As a result, art grew inside me and made me recognize the artist I would become. So, i started to tell stories to everyone, kids, adults, to my grandma, to my parents. And when I was 7 years old i wrote my first poem which won the first prize in a competition. Then, I started writing stories and poems. I used to tell stories in my room to myself. I started reading good poems and stories and decided to study Turkish Literature at the university.
During university, I used to tell my teacher that I will prepare the lesson with stories and on the next I will explain the lesson to my classmates. I also used to write stories during university. After graduation, I had drama training. One day, I saw a poster about a storytelling night by a french storyteller. I went there, even though I don’t speak or understand french, not even a word, and I started to listen to him telling the story. Then, I realized that I could understand the story. I also realized that we can touch one's heart without words but only with expressions and that hearts have their own language. Of course, I know that words also have an impact on us.
That is how I became a stroyteller.
I attended trainings in art therapy and drama and
I have been telling stories and working with kids and adults for
over 11 years.
What are the differences between telling stories to adults and telling stories to children?
Telling stories to adults or to children are different experiences.
During the fairy tale nights for adults, i tell stories along with musicians. Those nights have a combination of me telling stories and the musician doing the same thing through music at the same time. Music of our choice or compositions of the musicians are also included between the stories. In other words, story nights for adults are the shows in which stories and music are mingled.
During the performances with children, through the gate of the fairy tales, we all together walk on the words and build a new word. Telling stories to children is so important as we make bonds, you teach them the skills to solve a problem, to listen , to express themselves. I am thrilled to see the artist inside of them.
Talking about bonds, what is your bond with the stories you heard?
Aesthetics, beauty and imagination. Aesthetics is visible, beauty is hidden, imagination is being developed. You chase aesthetic but you explore beauty. I am so lucky as I listened too many stories and fairy tales from my storyteller grandmother and from my grandfather who was a great storyteller also, moreover from my grand granmothers and grand grandfathers whose story is a real fairy tale. Because of them, i can form words and concepts before seing them, i can imagine them in my mind.
There was much more in their aesthetics while telling stories, and this is the most important bond between us. In every story , fairy tale , conversation we explored the beauty. In order to find beauty,we felt love. That is why I always have independent, complete love inside of me.
